Replacing a mechanical diesel injector nozzle does not automatically restore the injector to its required calibration.
The completed injector assembly still needs to meet its specified opening-pressure and spray requirements.
The Injector Is More Than the Nozzle
A mechanical injector may include:
- nozzle;
- needle;
- spring;
- shims;
- holder;
- sealing interfaces.
Opening pressure depends on the force required to lift the needle against spring preload.
New Nozzle Does Not Set Spring Preload
After nozzle replacement, differences may remain in:
- spring condition;
- shim thickness;
- component tolerance;
- seat condition;
- assembly geometry.
Two injectors containing new nozzles can therefore open at different pressures.
Why Matching Matters
Large cylinder-to-cylinder differences can influence:
- injection onset;
- combustion noise;
- smoke;
- idle smoothness;
- contribution.
The acceptable values depend on the injector specification.
Final Testing Is Part of the Rebuild
Applicable tests may include:
- opening pressure;
- leakage;
- spray pattern;
- functional or chatter test where specified.
