A turbocharger does not create boost independently.
It depends on exhaust energy reaching the turbine.
If exhaust gas escapes before the turbine, turbocharger output can fall even when the turbocharger itself remains mechanically serviceable.
Follow the Energy Path
The sequence is:
Cylinder → Exhaust Manifold → Turbo Turbine → Compressor → Intake Boost
A leak between the cylinder head and turbine removes part of the energy available to drive the turbo.
Possible Leakage Locations
Depending on engine design, inspect:
- manifold gasket;
- manifold crack;
- manifold-to-turbo flange;
- EGR take-off area;
- fasteners.
Possible evidence can include soot marks or exhaust noise.
Why Mechanical Turbo Inspection Can Pass
The turbo shaft, bearings and compressor may all remain acceptable.
The fault is upstream:
turbo capable
but
insufficient exhaust energy reaches turbine.
Compare With Fuel Data
If rail pressure follows command while boost remains low under load, the air and exhaust paths should be evaluated before an injector or pump is condemned.
